Over 50 years ago a unique partnership was created between state forestry agencies and the US Forest Service. This union was needed to assist forest landowners and manage non-federal forest lands. The programs to deliver these services became known as State and Private Forestry. The success of these programs depends on a successful working relationship between federal and state forestry leaders.

From this, the Western Forestry Leadership Coalition, or WFLC, was officially organized in the year 2000.  There are thirty-four members consisting of seventeen State and six Territorial Foresters (also organized as the Council of Western State Foresters),  7 western USDA Forest Service Regional Foresters, three western USDA Forest Service Research Station Directors and  the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Lab Director.

It is the contribution and expertise of each of our members that results in an effective and influential leadership coalition, helping shape the course for western forestry.
